The Roy Orbison Tribute Show - Ipswich Civic Theatre

Athol Matcham's musical career began when he won a talent quest singing a Roy Orbison song.  He went on to become a lead singer in a rock and roll band, learning and refining his craft along the way.

This talented singer has been entertaining audiences for many years, performing in such diverse areas as rock and roll, light opera and country music.  A former Hoadley's Battle of the Sounds winner he has continued to impress fans and critics alike.

Athol has always incorporated Roy Orbison songs in his repetoire and when Roy passed away in 1988 Athol began his full tribute show. Backed by a six piece band Athol performs all Roy's hit songs with a voice and stage presence that would have the most dedicated fans believe it was the "Big O" himself.

This unique performer also finds time for charity shows and has performed all around Australia, performed at The Caven in Liverpool UK and with The Beatclub band for the Merseykats Charity in Liverpool. There are a few Roy Orbison tribute shows around the world today and most are good honest attempts, not many performers have the vocal range that made Roy Orbison unique , those very few that have, don't sound like the Big O. Athol has the range, the sound, and look, no-one sings Roy Orbison songs like Athol Matcham.

The Roy Orbison Tribute Show was awarded Tribute Show of the year 2003 at Clubs Queensland Entertainment of the year Awards and in June 2004 Athol won The Entertainer of the Year Award as well as The Tribute Show of the year and The Golden Service Award for 2004. Based in Queensland Athol and his band have a huge following and are in constant demand at all major venues.

George Michael Symphonica Tour - Australia 2012

AFTER HIS 2010 SOLD OUT TOUR, GEORGE MICHAEL RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA AS YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE!

George Michael triumphantly returns to Australia in November and December 2012, with his Symphonica Tour

The multi-million selling artist is back in good health and fighting fit after a battle with pneumonia at the end of last year, which unfortunately led to his ‘Symphonica’ tour being postponed. George Michael is now preparing to return to the big stage later this year with rescheduled and newly added tour dates in Europe, the UK and Australia.

Before its unexpected hiatus, Symphonica, played to packed houses in Europe and fulfilled George's long-cherished artistic ambition of performing alongside a full orchestra. On the tour George will perform a carefully chosen selection of his own material spanning his remarkable career; and he will also cover some of his favourite songs from other artists.

On Symphonica, the music has been re-worked and re-arranged for a large scale orchestra, which will accompany George and his band throughout the tour. This brand new symphonic production has given each song added layers and fresh nuance. It's unmistakeably George Michael, but not as we've ever known him.

With an unparalleled voice, a large-scale orchestra and a tantalising promise to include songs never previously performed live, Symphonica is a magical experience awaiting singer and audience alike...

Tue 13 Nov - Adelaide Entertainment Centre

Wed 21 & 22 Nov - Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne

The Beach Boys 50 - 2012 Tour Australia

Paul Dainty, Chairman of Dainty Group has announced that one of the worlds' most legendary and influential bands of all time The Beach Boys, will tour Australia this year as part of their 50th Anniversary Tour with dates confirmed in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first time in more than two decades that original members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks will tour together.

The 50th Anniversary Tour, which commenced in North America in April, is receiving critical acclaim and proving to be a historical concert event not to be missed.

For five decades, America's first pop band to reach the 50 year milestone has recorded and performed the music that has become the world's favorite soundtrack to summer. Founded in Hawthorne, California in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. In 1962, neighbour David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits with Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing for the group.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and recipients of The Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award, The Beach Boys are an American institution that is iconic around the world.

Simple Minds And Devo Take To Australia

Two rather different but very popular ‘80s pop acts are coming together for a big tour of Australia this December, as Simple Minds and Devo play a series of theatre and winery shows with support from Australian art-rock superstars the church and, for some shows, the Sean Kelly led Models.

Australia was the first territory to embrace the music of Simple Minds, their Love Song in 1981 was a massive hit here, as was the New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) album which followed in 1982. Of course, after that, they became one of the world’s biggest bands with hits like Don’t You (Forget About Me) and Alive and Kicking which continue to be cherished the world over.

One of the most exciting, subversive and infectious acts of the post-punk era, Devo not only have a swag of hits, but a huge number of critically adored records which are seen to be some of the most influential among many modern bands. Likewise, their stage show has always been one that confounds and intrigues and their recent visits as headliners of the Splendour In The Grass and Livid festivals have shown that they have not lost any of what made them so exciting.

Alongside the long-standing Australian legends of alternative pop and rock music the church and groundbreaking Aussies Models (who play the A Day On The Green winery dates in the Yarra Valley, Perth, Hunter Valley and Brisbane's Mt Cotton), these shows are set to showcase some of the finest music that came out of the 1980s but is still completely relevant and exciting today.
Tickets are on sale Monday 2 July. Dates are below.

Gaga Arrives in Sydney And Meets The Fans Outside Park Hyatt Hotel Before Night Out

SYDNEY went gaga last night with the arrival of the US pop diva fresh from her three-show tour stop in Brisbane.

And just when we thought the claw-nailed, blue-haired chanteuse may opt for a dowdy tracksuit and some sensible shoes for her Sydney arrival, we were pleasantly relieved to see the visiting singer frock up appropriately for her grand entrance at the Park Hyatt Hotel last night.

Made up from top-to-toe, Lady Gaga spent 30 minutes with fans outside the hotel before retreating inside - where, we hear, she had a wardrobe change before venturing out with some of her entourage. It's understood Gaga and pals stopped by Bar 100 at The Rocks en route to Dave Freeman's Kings Cross speakeasy Backroom.

After all, with three days until her first Sydney show - at Allphones Arena on Wednesday night - there is plenty of time to shake off a hangover.

Meanwhile Gaga's recent censorship troubles in Thailand have followed her to Australia, with reports the Cultural Ministry of Thailand has filed an official complaint with the US Embassy for what it says is an "offensive use of the Thai flag" after she appeared on stage with a Thai flag tied to a motorcycle.

Sydney Film Festival Receives A Dose Of Samoan Sunshine

Sydney-siders will receive a splash of Samoan sunshine in the middle of winter as Samoa features in an outdoor screen campaign as part of the Sydney Film Festival.

The 59th Sydney Film Festival will run for 12 days and nights from June 6-17 and is one of the longest running events of its kind in the world.

Attended by more than 110,000 viewers, the Festival will showcase the best in film from across Australia and around the world, including features, documentaries, short films and more. The Festival brings the Sydney CBD to life with screenings of over 150 films, red carpet galas, forums and events attended by international guests at venues including the iconic State Theatre and Martin Place Amphitheatre.

Playing its “one place on earth that hasn’t sped up” campaign on screen as a reminder of Lonely Planet’s tribute: “if relaxation was an Olympic event, this is where you’d come to train” Samoa Tourism Authority is proud to support the event and will be enticing film lovers to Samoa with beautiful beach images on the giant LED screen at Martin Place daily during the Festival.

“We are very excited to be part of this year’s 59th Sydney Film Festival,” says Peter Sereno of Samoa Tourism Authority.

“This year marks the 50th Anniversary of our Independence so we wanted to share some of our joy with Sydney and to remind everyone that we are just a 5 hour flight away across the Pacific!  If ever you need a quick escape from the cold winter, take it easy and if you would like to experience Polynesian culture at its most authentic, come and visit our beautiful islands – where the hospitality is as warm as the weather and where the smiles are as bright as the sunshine!”
